Ericsson ConsumerLab just released a report that identifies some of the most important consumer trends for 2014 and among those are:
- people looking for apps across all sectors of society
- Internet access everywhere
- physical surroundings to be as responsive as interactive internet service
- ability to switch devices as they shift locations
With Qualcomm Atheros’ recent introduction of the Qualcomm Internet Processor (IPQ) product line designed to transform networking devices like home gateways, routers and media servers into “Smarthome” platforms, the company is poised to provide consumers with exactly what they report that they want.
According to the press release, “the truly smart home is going to require a number of network configurations to address existing and future applications and devices.”
Qualcomm says their new chipsets will let carriers deliver new content, applications and services such as security and surveillance, as well as allow appliance and electronics makers to provide unique capabilities for home automation and control.
In addition, the IPQ platform promises to bring new levels of power efficiency for the “always on, always connected” home, helping to reduce the cost of network operations in enterprise access points. At this point in time, home networking equipment consumes significant levels of power, impacting the environment and consumer costs. “Based on Qualcomm’s low-power mobile architecture, the 28 nm IPQ offers up to 70 percent greater performance-per-watt than the nearest competitor. The IPQ optimizes energy consumption by dynamically scaling system operation to adjust to network demands, whereas most network processors function only in on or off modes, with continuous power used in always-on gateways.”
